Volos Olympic City
The city of Volos, one of the four Greek Olympic cities, was host to the early stages
of the Olympic football event, welcoming women's teams from Nigeria, Sweden and Japan and men's teams from Ghana, Mali, Mexico, Japan and Italy, as well as the
Greek team.
Arrival of the Olympic Flame in Volos
Volos and Nea Ionia staged an impressive reception for the Olympic flame. The flame was rowed into the harbour to the sound of the international pianist Dimitris Sgouros and the City Symphony Orchestra, conducted by the international maestro Simeon Kogan. First to run with the flame was the international polo player Filippos Kaiafas, and the last the rower Vasilis Polimeros.

Before arriving in Volos the flame was carried through Nea Ionia, site of the Panthessaliko Stadium where the early stages of the football event were held.
Thousands of citizens watched the flame being carried through the streets; the last runner, veteran footballer Tasos Maniatakis, lit the cauldron at the Municipal Theatre.
These were unique experiences for the city, destined to remain for ever etched in our memories and our hearts.
