Community of Makrinitsa
Makrinitsa, 'balcony of Mt. Pilion', is a traditional village, protected by law against inappropriate development to preserve its unique architectural character.
It lies 17km from Volos and 12km from the Pilion Skiing Centre. It represents a perfect marriage of the man-made and natural environments.

A location of particular natural beauty is Brani, the square at the entrance to the village with its stream, as well as the central stone-paved square of the village, known as the 'bazaar', with its unique fountain, the 'Liontaria', decorated with rich stone reliefs, the ancient plane trees, the church of Aghios Ioannis, and the amazing view down over Volos.

There are many noteworthy examples of traditional architecture, such as the fine old houses of the Vaitzis, Hatzicostas, Vlachlis and Topalis families, the last of which now functions as the Pilion Museum of Folk Art and History, and also the picturesque churches, the fountains, the old water-presses, known as dristeles, the derelict tanneries which flourished in the 19th century and remained active until the 2nd World War, the stone, arched bridges at Lestiani, Loziniko, Alevizi and Kakona, and also the bridge at Karia.

Makrinitsa began to develop as a tourist destination in the 1960's, when the local people realized that they should take steps to preserve its authentic character, promote their special attractions, customs and traditions.
There are a host of cultural and folklore events all year round, including the unique folk-dancing and mime tradition known as the 'Maides', which refers to the annual rebirth of nature and life and is re-enacted each summer by the young people of the village.

Visitors to Makrinitsa can choose from a wide range of alternative activities.
Hiking: An extensive network of signed paths leads the hiker through the forest and the other beautiful locations, to Lestiani, Fytoko, Kryo Nero, Flambouro Gerakias and so on.
Mountain biking: Fans of this beautiful sport can travel many miles along country roads, enjoying all sorts of pleasant surprises.
Riding: In the boundless meadowland above Makrinitsa, riders will feel like modern Centaurs!
Skiing: Just 12km from Makrinitsa the slopes of the Pilion Ski Centre await you. |
