20km west of Volos, in the heart of the plains of Thessaly, lies Velestino, centre of the Municipality of Feres.
One of the most historic of all the districts of Thessaly, Feres is associated with ancient Feres and the legendary kingdom of Admetus and Alcestes, whose devotion and self-sacrifice inspired Euripides to write one of his finest tragedies.
Magnesia, Municipality of Feres Rigas Velestinlis (1757 - 1798)In more recent times the name of Velestino has been associated with one of the heroes of the War of Independence in 1821, Rigas Velestinlis, as well as with the only victorious battle of that period against the Ottoman oppressors, the Battle of Velestino in 1897.
Modern Velestino, and the whole Municipal District
of Feres, are an important centre for agriculture
and livestock rearing.
It is worth visiting the place where Rigas Velestinlis had his house, the Museum of Agricultural Implements, the Hypereian Spring, mentioned in Homer, the Temple of Thaulian Zeus (on the road towards Chloi), the mediaeval aqueduct and the water mills.
