Municipalities of Portaria

Portaria was once the most important commercial centre for the twenty-four villages of Pilion. The Theoxenia Hotel was regarded, in the early 20th century, as the largest and most luxurious hotel in the Balkans.

Portaria is still the 'queen of hospitality' on Pilion. It is also famous for its fine neo-classical houses, many of which are now run as guesthouses.

The Municipality of Portaria is made up of four villages perched on the slopes of north-west Pilion. The administrative centre is the town of Portaria (known as Orminio to the ancient Greeks and Ano Dryanouvaina to the Byzantines), and the municipality also includes the villages of Alli Meria, Katihori and Stayiates.

ΒThe municipality is situated between the beautiful coastline of the Pagasitic Gulf and the snow-capped peaks of Pilion, with their superb skiing slopes.
It has dozens of hotels and guesthouses.
It communicates with the city of Volos by highway.

Ascending the road to Portaria the visitor enjoys a magnificent view of Volos below, nestling in the Pagasitic Gulf.

Portaria has a police station, post office, bank, doctor's surgery and pharmacy.

Among the most interesting of the summer's cultural events are the traditional Pilion weddings, the dance festival at Portaria, the flower festival at Alli Meria, the tsipouro festival at Katihori and the sausage festival at Stayiates
