Municipality of Nea Ionia
 |
After the Asia Minor catastrophe a huge wave of refugees made their way to Magnesia from the shores of Ionia, settling in what is now known as Nea Ionia. The centre of the old refugee quarter was the Church of Evangelistria, built to house the holy relics, the memories and faith the refugees had brought with them from their 'lost homelands'
The change between the old refugee town and the contemporary city of today demonstrates the huge strides taken by the Greek people.
Abandoned workshops and warehouses now converted into centres for the arts |
Modern sports centres and stadiums sprouting in the industrial wasteland around the city, providing safe and effective training facilities for athletes and presenting to the world the image of a modern sporting city.
Thus the dreams of a city have taken shape.
You should visit the commercial centre of the city, the historic Church of the Evangelistria, the old silk factory. Businesses can stage their conferences at the state-of-the-art Melissatika conference centre. Gourmet pleasures await the visitor at the many traditional tavernas and ouzo bars.
Work out at the Vasdekeio Athletics Centre, the indoor pool, the ultra-modern Panthessaliko Stadium - venue for the early stages of the Olympic football event in August 2004. Relax and plan your excursions around Magnesia.
Whether it is business or pleasure which brings you here, Nea Ionia will have its own unique way of making it a magical stay.
