Municipality of Volos

Volos is located on the shore of the Pagasitic Gulf and overshadowed by Pilion with its delightful villages. A large, dynamic, modern Greek city - with the good fortune to be situated in one of the most beautiful parts of Greece.

Home to the third largest port in the country, Volos is growing rapidly; it is also one of Greece's most attractive cities, which enchants the visitor at first sight. It was one of four cities to stage preliminary rounds of the football event in the 2004 Olympics.

Economic growth is matched by a rich cultural and creative life in a modern city which has managed successfully to blend the neoclassical heritage with the modern, and look to the future while respecting the past.
Volos is also home to the University of Thessaly.

Great art came to Volos in the late 19th century in the shape of Theofilos, brilliant master of naive folk themes, and then continued with the appearance of another great painter, Georgio De Chirico, son of Evaristo De Chirico, the Director of the Thessaly Railway Company, and creator of the famous Pilion steam railway.

The city also has an illustrious tradition of musical education, which has continued down to the present day.

Volos boasts one of the most important archaeological museums in Greece, as well as the Kitsos Makris Folklore Centre, the house of the painter H. Zogias in Anakasia, the Kontos residence (Theofilos Museum) and the Pilion Museum of Folk Art and History (formerly known as the Topalis residence) in Makrinitsa.

At a short distance from the city of Volos there are the important Neolithic settlements of Dimini and Sesklo, where the first traces of permanent human habitation of the region have been found.

The journey to Magnesia begins in Volos, a city which enchants thousands of visitors each year - visitors who find here everything they seek: many comfortable hotels, night life, and all sorts of opportunities to sample the famous tsipouro and delicious seafood dishes.
