A thousand choices... a single destination

Municipality of Almyros

The origins of modern Almyros must be traced back to ancient Alos, land of Achilles, close to the modern Kefalosi. At some point the community moved to the present position after their homes had been destroyed in pirate raids.
At the Archaeological Museum the visitor can admire stone sculptures, reliefs and inscriptions, small artifacts from the Mycenean, Geometric, Archaic and Hellenistic periods, and from the years of Roman rule.

Just outside Almyros are the remains of ancient Alos and the Kouri forest, which covers an area of about 275 acres, has artificial lakes, various species of wildlife and a little train which takes visitors on a tour of the forest.

Setting off from Almyros one can visit the Monastery of the Koimisis tis Theotokou (Dormition of the Virgin), at Ano Xenia, 600m above sea level on Mt. Othrys (the monastery has superb frescos and a carved wooden
screen dating from the 16th century), and then go on to walk on the mountain and visit the wetland site at Zirelia.

Route maps are available from the Forestry Authority in Almyros, and information on walksand mountain hikes can be sought from the Alpine Club of Almyros.

A short distance from the town are the beaches of Almyros, Evxeinoupolis and Platanos, where you can swim and enjoy appetizers at the beautiful little tavernas.
Among the main events in the region are the Evxeinoupolis carnival and the fishing evening organized every June on Almyros beach.
